OHSU tests new prostate cancer drug
June 8th, 2008 Posted in prostate cancerThe MDV3100 drug shows great promise in the treatment of prostate cancer. The first human trials on the drug are underway at Oregon Health Sciences University.
Researchers say they’re learning more than ever about the biology of prostate cancer. They know testosterone is the driving force behind the cancer, but treatments to limit testosterone don’t completely keep it out of the body. They believe this new drug will shut down the testosterone receptors on the prostate and significantly reduce the cancer’s growth.
The study has been underway at OHSU for nearly a year, and there are openings in the study. Dr. Beer says more studies will be needed before FDA approval can be sought. He says it’ll likely be at least three years before the drug would be available for general use.
