New strategies in treatment of metastatic prostate cancer
October 26th, 2009 Posted in prostate cancerProvenge has been shown to improve the survival of men with castrate resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Growth factors are potential targets for treating prostate cancer. Unfortunately, agents targeting these factors have been ineffective. Monoclonal antibodies to block IL-6 have been developed but the trials have been stopped due to excessive toxicity.
Differentiation agents such as calcitriol have been combined with docetaxel showed more deaths in the combination arm and the trial was stopped. Anti-clusterin agents in combination with docetaxel has shown improved survival in a randomized phase II trial.
