Canadian researchers may soon come with novel way of trteating prostate cancer

March 29th, 2010 Posted in prostate cancer

According to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada, Canadian researchers may soon come out with a breakthrough in treating cancer. This novel way of treating cancer will be through the use of viruses, called oncolytic viruses, which will actively seek out and destroy cancer cells. For the past 10 years researchers have been studying how to scientifically engineering the body’s natural occurring viruses to combat cancer. The design of the oncolytic viruses would be to seek out and destroy cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone.

This procedure would be a mass improvement in treatment over chemotherapy and radiation, which will destroy both healthy and cancer cells alike. Radiation therapy generally destroys the healthy cells in the cancer tumor site, but chemotherapy can destroy cancer cells anywhere in the body.

Caution: This study has only passed phase 1 of clinical trials so it does have a long way to go before it will be deemed both successful and safe for patients.
