COX-2 inhibitors have no effect in preventing prostate cancer
October 2nd, 2009 Posted in prostate cancer preventionA recent Phase II trial of the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib (Celebrex/Pfizer) concluded that this agent “had no effect on intermediate biomarkers of prostate carcinogenesis.”
The main conclusion of authors is that 4 to 6 weeks treatment with celecoxib had no effect on intermediate biomarkers of prostate carcinogenesis, despite the achievement of measurable tissue levels.
Since previous studies have found that the COX-2 inhibitors are associated with a range of potentially serious cardiovascular side effects, many urologists think that the use of a COX-2 inhibitor in prostate cancer prevention would have needed to demonstrate massive potential impact on risk for prostate cancer to overcome the potential for known side effects.
