Early detection is key to beating prostate cancer

May 28th, 2009 Posted in prostate cancer diagnosis, prostate cancer prevention

Acording to Dr. Anthony Catanese of Somerset Medical Center, the key to staving off or even preventing men to die from prostate cancer is early detection.

“There are two kinds of prostate cancer: aggressive and less aggressive,” said Catanese, who works out of Somerset Medical Center’s Steeplechase Cancer Center and on May 17 ran in the 5K race of the Steeplechase Spring Classic that helped benefit the center. “About six people per year in my practice die of prostate cancer, and some of them are men in their 40s and 50s or even less. That is why early detection is so important.”

He presented this opinion during an informal seminar conducted last Wednesday at Raritan Valley Country Club.

The American Urological Association and the American Cancer Society recommend men begin prostate-cancer screenings at 50. Catanese recommends it be done at age 40 or younger, especially if higher risk factors are present.
