Annual test for prostate cancer

August 30th, 2008 Posted in prostate cancer diagnosis

Early suspicions of prostate cancer presence, before symptoms are noticed, can arise from an abnormal blood test. This PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), is not a perfect test and can occasionally give a false result either positive or negative, but a raised level indicates there could be a disorder within the prostate gland which needs further investigation by clinical examination and possibly biopsies.

This helps doctors come to an early cancer diagnosis which may need treatment for a complete cure. Some prostate cancers are, however, relatively dormant and, if not apparently life-threatening, may not need active treatment.
