About the validity of PSA as a screening test
October 23rd, 2009 Posted in prostate cancer diagnosisA Swedish research at Gävle Hospital, has attempted to evaluate whether the PSA test actually attains standards of sufficient validity for use as a prostate cancer screening tool.
Dr Holmström, the study leader, and his coleagues concluded, based on recent screening population in Umeå, Sweden, that no single cut-off value for [PSA] concentration attained likelihood ratios formally required for a screening test. They also think additional biomarkers for early detection of prostate cancer are needed before population based screening for prostate cancer should be introduced.
