About the validity of PSA as a screening test

October 23rd, 2009 Posted in prostate cancer diagnosis

A Swedish research at Gävle Hospital, has attempted to evaluate whether the PSA test actually attains standards of sufficient validity for use as a prostate cancer screening tool.

Dr Holmström, the study leader, and his coleagues concluded, based on recent screening population in Umeå, Sweden, that no single cut-off value for [PSA] concentration attained likelihood ratios formally required for a screening test. They also think additional biomarkers for early detection of prostate cancer are needed before population based screening for prostate cancer should be introduced.
