New prostate cancer treatment offers fewer side effects

May 5th, 2010 Posted in hifu

For many men, treatment for prostate cancer often leaves them experiencing impotence and incontinence, but a new procedure available outside the United States is producing the same results without the side effects.

It seems that a new treatment called High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) could help prostate cancer patients. This procedure uses heat to pinpoint and kill prostate cancer as successfuly as traditional methods, but without the side effects. Uologists say that there’s no bleeding, there’s no other effect, and the prostate and cancer in it just shrinks down and are reabsorbed by the body

However, the treatment has not been approved in the United States, meaning its $25,000 price tag is not covered by insurance.
