What is prostate?

Prostate is a specific male glandular organ found deep in the pelvis that surrounds the neck of bladder and the first part of urethra. The gland is conical in shape, measures 4 cm in transverse diameter and 3 cm in vertical diameter and is very rich in nerves and muscles.

  1. Prostate is considered a part of the male reproductive system as it produces about 20% of the fluid found in the semen. It's contribution is not essential for fertility, prostate only plays a secondary role in helping sperm to survive and penetrate easier during the sexual intercourse.
  2. Additionally, the gland produces hormones and enzymes also not crucial for men to stay healthy.

Why prostate is important for men?

Being involved in male reproductive system, prostate diseases hit on men's basic functions such as erectile dysfunction, impotence, difficulties in urination, complications on the liver and the lungs. Thus treatment options are very important to maintain or restore its functions in normal limits.

What are the main problems of prostate?

The most common problem of prostate is it enlarges as man ages, so by age 70 more than 40% of men will experience its enlargement. Because of prostate location, it may press against the urethra and men may experience troubles with weaker or slower urination.
